We sent out letters as a class today to all of the friendly neighbors that wrote us back about their houses! We hope you get the letters soon and check our blog. Please be patient because I have to upload and scan every single page and there are a lot of pages:)
Thanks again for all of your help! I thought this was the most efficient way to share the information.

Dear Students, Parents, and Neighbors
Dear Students, Parents, and Neighbors,
I have created this blog in order to communicate with students, parents and other teachers as well as share information. I had this idea because it is 2012 and its about time I do this AND I did a project with some students not long ago and I needed an easy way to share information. The project I did was based on an Architecture Unit. At the beginning of the unit, my 5th graders at Blossomwood learned new vocabulary about architecture and also did some hands on activities to get a basic understanding of building structures. They built the tallest free standing structure they could with toothpicks and marshmallows! That was fun. From that, they figured out that bases of buildings need to be sturdy in order to hold the rest of the structure as well as learning that some shapes didn't hold up as well as others.
They learned the importance of the architectural creed "Form follows function" too. The students then went on an "architectural walk around the block" because our school is located in such a perfect spot to study this by looking at the homes we are surrounded by! This took several weeks working on their rough draft and then completing a final draft of their "Architecture Books".
The culminating activity for this unit was called "The Windows of Downtown". We went on another "walk" around the block and the students were able to pick out which house they would like to know more about. They wrote the homeowners in hopes of hearing back and WE HEARD BACK! Not only did some people write sweet one page notes but some put together 10 page informative essays with colored pictures and all. It was GREAT and the kids loved it. I loved hearing about all of the history from all of these homes!
*The students were told to pick out KEY words about their houses and work it into an ABC graphic organizer. Depending on how much information the students received depends on how much they created on their project.*
I am going to post the entire project on this blog so everyone can see the awesome work these students did! Students, parents, teachers, friendly neighbors.....ENJOY! Way to go students! Y'all ROCK!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Johnson
